Essential Reading Skills List:
1. Knows basic sounds of all letters – capital and lowercase including the “looptail” g
2. Sounds out and blends CVC words like: mop, bet, lap, fit, sup, dif, etc. using all short vowels (including nonsense words)
3. Sounds out and blends words with consonant blends and digraphs (sh, ch, th, ck, wh) like: just, shut, mask, limp…
4. Reads words with suffixes –s, -ed, -es, and –ing and identifies the baseword
5. Reads words with the silent “magic” ‘e’ at the end and with the letter ‘y’ at the end like: bike, late, cute, try, bunny, happy, etc while not confusing them with CVC words
6. Reads words with glued sounds (am, an, ing, all) and words with r-controlled vowels (er, ur, ir, ar, or)
7. Reads fluently by reading at least 24 words correctly in a passage per minute
8. Can automatically and instantly read CVC words and nonsense chunks of words without sounding them out like: sev, nox, bat, sip, nep… (This prepares children to decode larger words by looking for smaller chunks.)
9. Reads words with long vowel teams (ai, oe, oa, ee, ea, ay)
Reads words with glued sounds with short vowels (ong, ang, ing, ung, ink, ank, unk, onk) and glued sounds with long vowels (ost, ind, ild, old)
10. Reads fluently by reading at least 49 words correctly in a passage per minute
